Kumiko is a framework, a construction kit for software. You use it to build business apps in the TypeScript programming language that serve several customers or companies from one app and keep their data cleanly apart (this is called multi-tenant). Every change to the data is recorded automatically in an audit trail, and individual features can be switched on or off per customer.
What you get
- A public GitHub repository at github.com/CosmicDriftGameStudio/kumiko-framework with the full source code, all tests and all examples
- Ready-made packages on NPM, the package registry for JavaScript and TypeScript (
@cosmicdrift/kumiko-framework,@cosmicdrift/kumiko-bundled-features,@cosmicdrift/kumiko-dev-serverand more), free to use - A command-line tool for developing, testing, building and database updates (
bun kumiko dev | test | build | migrate | …) - The BSL-1.1 license: free for everything except commercial hosting that competes with kumiko.rocks. After 2 years, every release automatically becomes Apache-2.0, a fully open license. As long as we keep developing, the current state is therefore protected for 2 years. Older releases belong to the community
What you handle yourself
- Hosting, meaning running it on your own servers or with a cloud provider (for example with Docker on Coolify, Hetzner, Kubernetes or your own hardware)
- Maintaining the repository with your code and your audit trail
- Connecting the AI with your own access (BYOK, “bring your own key”): Anthropic, OpenAI or a local model through Ollama
Who it’s for
- Engineering teams that want full control and run their own hosting
- European mid-market companies with their own IT that have to run software in-house
- Software shops that want the same technical foundation across several customer projects
What Kumiko is built from
| Layer | Tech | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime | Bun | runs the code |
| API | Hono | the interface through which apps and services talk to the server |
| Database | Postgres + Drizzle ORM | stores all data; Drizzle translates between code and database |
| Login | jose (JWT) | sign-in tokens that prove who is logged in |
| Validation | Zod | checks input before it is saved |
| Search | Meilisearch (behind a swappable interface) | full-text search across your data |
| UI | React + Expo | one codebase for web and mobile |
| Realtime | SSE via Redis Pub/Sub | changes appear on screen live, without reloading |
| Testing | bun:test | automated tests, built into Bun |
Postgres stores every change as an event, builds the views for the interface from those events, and serves as the single source of truth. That is why there is no need for Kafka, EventStoreDB or NATS (other systems for event streams). Fewer moving parts mean less work to operate.
Ready-made building blocks (optional)
They all live in the package @cosmicdrift/kumiko-bundled-features:
auth-email-password: sign-in with email and password, password reset, email verificationsessions: manage sessions and end them immediately when needed, clean up old onestenantanduser: master data for customers (tenants) and their usersdeliverywithchannel-in-app,channel-emailandchannel-push: notifications in the app, by email and as push messagesjobs: run tasks in the background (built on BullMQ)feature-toggles: technical switches per customeraudit: automatic audit trailsecrets: encrypted store for credentialsfiles-provider-s3: file storage in S3-compatible storage such as MinIO
All of them are optional, a simple Hello-World runs without them.
Relationship to the platform
kumiko.rocks itself runs on the framework. Whatever is new in the framework automatically becomes available on the platform, but not the other way round. Features that belong only to the platform, meaning the Designer, the AI builder, setting up new customer environments and billing, live in a private repository and are not part of the open-source release. Running the platform yourself is only possible under enterprise terms.
